Worksite Leaders -- More Important Than Ever!
Various Roles that Worksite Leaders Play:
Member Organizer
Worksite Leaders who serve as Member Organizers encourage their co-workers who are not members of the union to join the union. Additionally, Member Organizers talk to workers in nonunion workplaces about forming a union.
Committee Member
Worksite Leaders who serve as Committee Members participate in meetings with managers about workers' issues. These frequently involve collective bargaining or labor-management meetings. The Local 6 model of representation seeks to use the skills of Worksite Leaders to take the lead in running union committees.
Communications
Communications Worksite Leaders help write fliers and newsletters for publication in their workplace, and maintain the union's bulletin boards at work. Also, some communicators use the union's voice mail hotline for their particular workplace to leave messages for and get messages from co-workers.
Member Political Organizer
Member Political Organizers discuss workers' political issues with co-workers, work to make certain that everyone is registered to vote, and try to involve co-workers in political campaigns.
Dispute Resolution
Worksite Leaders who serve as Dispute Resolution Leaders are called Shop Stewards. They investigate problems on the job and represent co-workers in meetings with the employer.
