Seattle City Council Proclaims April 4th
Security Officer Appreciation Day

SEATTLE—On Monday, March 19, 2007, the Seattle City Council unanimously approved a resolution proclaiming April 4, 2007, Security Officer Appreciation Day.  (View Proclamation)

In January 2005, hundreds of security officers signed a petition to the Seattle City Council asking for the Council's public support of their campaign.  The City Council responded by unanimously passing a resolution supporting Principles for a More Secure Seattle. This resolution addressed such issues as stabilizing the security workforce by reducing turnover rates, increasing wages, improving benefits such as health care, and raising training standards.

Now, nearly 700 security officers working in Seattle and Bellevue are negotiating with their employers to address the issues raised in the 2005 resolution.  In support of their efforts to make real gains for workers, and real gains for the safety of the tenants and property security officers protect, the Seattle City Council is once again stepping up to publicly show their support for security officers by proclaiming April 4, 2007, Security Officer Appreciation Day.

SEIU is the largest security officers’ union in the U.S. SEIU represents more than 50,000 private security officers and public safety personnel. Security officers are members of SEIU in Chicago, New York, the Bay Area, and other major cities.
