Principles for a Covenant for Justice for Janitors
Statement of Support, Washington Association of Churches

God, who makes a covenant with all humankind, is the center of human life and community.  Human beings are created in the image and likeness of the Creator and are called to be stewards of the gifts we have been given.  Each person has dignity, which must not be compromised.

All economic life should be shaped by moral principles.  Economic choices and institutions must be judged by how they protect or undermine the life and dignity of the human person, support the family and serve the common good.

People have a basic right to productive lives, including compensated employment.  Part of compensated employment is the right to just and living wages and other benefits to sustain a life with dignity.

Specifically, we recognize:

  1. Janitors are a diverse people who work hard, pay taxes, and seek economic security.
  2. All janitors, regardless of immigration status, enjoy human rights as people living and working in Washington state.
  3. Organizing for a collective voice in the workplace through union representation is a legal and legitimate expression of the right to freedom of association protected by federal and state law.
  4. Threats, retaliation, harassment and firings for organizing using perceived immigration status as a tool, is illegal and immoral.
  5. A living wage with health benefits is necessary for families who seek to be self-sufficient and enjoy a decent standard of living.

We commit:

  • To educate the community on the right of workers, especially janitors, to obtain just and living wages and other benefits that allow for a life with dignity.
  • To support workers, especially janitors, by helping employers and responsible authorities to recognize the rights of workers to organize and negotiate contracts in good faith.
